The idea for velcro came to George de Mestral while he was out hunting. He noticed that his trousers and the ears of his dog were covered in burrs, picked up by brushing against burdock week. On returning home, de Mestral examined the tenacious little burrs under the microscope and observed their numerous tiny hooks. Recalling how a jammed sip on his wifes dress had ruined an evening out, he set about re-creating the hooked surface of the burr in textile form and came up with a new kind of fastener.
