Did You Know....? - Inventive Minds
German chemist Christian Schonbein founded the modern explosives industry in his wife's kitchen. It was while working there in 1845 that he accidentally spilt a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acid on to a cotton apron. He hung the apron up to dry, but as soon as it dried out, it exploded. To make up for the loss of his apron, schonbein had stumbled across nitro-cellulose. By 1890, nitro-cellulose, in the form of gun cotton, had replaced gun powder as the most effective military explosive.
