During the Second World War, American pilots in the Pacific were given asparagus as part of their emergency rations. This wasn't to add a taste of Haute Cuisine to their diet, but to help them catch fish. The idea was that any pilot who found himself stranded on a desert island should eat the asparagus and then urinate into the sea. The strong chemical attractants in the asparagus would pass into the urine and lure the fish.
