The 1500-mile long Alaska Highway was built in just 6 months.  Afraid that Japan might attack via the Aleutian Islands, the Americans enlisted 10,000 engineers from the US Army and 4000 civilians to begin work on the road in the spring of 1942.  By building seven and a half miles of road a day through forests and marshes, they finished in November of that year.
