The first pair of roller skates were the brainchild of Belgian musician Joseph Merlin. Keen to impress guests at a ball in London in 1760, Merlin made a grand entry on his skates while playing the violin. But, unable to stop or change direction, he shot across the ballroom straight into a full-length mirror and was badly injured.
