Police in Radnor, Pennsylvania, interrogated a suspect by  placing a metal colander on his head and connecting it with  wires to a photocopy machine. The message "He's lying" was placed in the copier, and police pressed the copy button each time they thought the suspect wasn't telling the truth.   Believing the "lie detector" was working, the suspect confessed.

Meth PSA

Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky knows a thing or two about scaring the ever-living drug use out of the average moviegoer. Which is probably why he was tapped to direct a handful of anti-meth PSA for the Meth Project.
In case you were toying with the idea of getting into the glamorous world of meth use, these spots will likely help dissuade you of that.

Canadian Parking Fail

This Canadian parking fail is not photoshopped

A man and woman from Ottawa hopped in a cab near Airport Parkway. They had no clue that they were about to live through something you’d see in a GTA 4 crash compilation.

Unfortunately the cause wasn’t a high speed police pursuit, or a chase involving the KGB.  Their taxi driver simply had a seizure.

The 36-year-old man driving the taxi had just picked up two people — a 42-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man — on Sawmill Private near the Airport Parkway and Heron Road minutes before the crash. His passengers reported to paramedics that he went into a seizure when he approached Brookfield Road just metres away, slammed his foot down on the gas pedal, and then accelerated onto Junction Avenue.

Since the driver’s foot was smashed on the gas pedal, they did more then give someone’s BMW a little fender bender. The taxi smashed through two trees and slammed the Beamer so hard that it landed on it’s roof. The cab then landed on top with it’s tires still spinning. Neighbors actually thought it was a house fire.

My favorite part of this story is how completely badass these Canadians are.

  • The woman passenger had cuts on her face but refused to go to the hospital
  • The male passenger had gashes on his leg but walked it off
  • A bystander who busted out the car window to help them, was bloody but fine
  • The owner of the BMW took motherfucking shrapnel to the face when the cab exploded but took it like a boss

The only person who needed a trip to the hospital was the cabby, but that’s probably because he just had a seizure.

Anyone else have this song in their head now?

Find My Friends Divorce

A New York City man says he’s divorcing his wife after he used the iPhone’s new “Find My Friends” app to catch her cheating.
He told the MacRumors forum that he suspected she was seeing someone else, so he bought her an iPhone 4S and enabled location sharing. Sure enough, when she texted to say she was with a friend in the Meatpacking District, he checked the map and saw she was actually a few miles away on the east side.
The moral of the story: make sure you know who your phone is sharing your location with. This is probably not the last time we’ll hear about someone turning “Find My Friends” into “Stalk My Significant Other.”

All Kinds of Wrong

Security camera footage of a little girl being run over twice near a hardware market in Foshan, China, made the rounds this past weekend on Chinese social networks. Not for the horrific injuries sustained by the child, but for the horrific callousness of over a dozen passers-by who ignored the toddler and left her for dead.
Identified as Yueyue, the two-year-old was initially declared brain dead, but according to her mother, the situation has improved over the past 24 hours, and she is now stable, and has even regained some sensation in her extremities. Yueyue remains in intensive care at the General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command.
The indifference of 18 individuals who walked by Yueyue without calling for help has generated immense outcry both in China and around the world.
“What’s up with people these days? They make so many excuses to turn a blind eye,” Yueyue’s father told the Telegraph. “The society is so indifferent, so heartless.”
The driver of the first vehicle to run over the child has been caught, according to local reports. He claims he was on the phone with his girlfriend, with whom he had just broken up, and didn’t notice Yueyue.
The Guardian says many blamed the lack of Good Samaritan laws — which protect pedestrians who assist in emergencies — for the lack of empathy.

Warning: If the above description didn’t make it clear enough, the video is extremely graphic in nature and very upsetting.

Whoopsie Daisey

Pre-writing two different articles in advance of a news story with two possible outcomes is a fairly common practice in journalistic circles. But publishing the wrong one is not.

The Daily Mail inadvertently pressed the post button on the article that claimed Amanda Knox had lost her appeal — mere moments after the 24-year-old Seattleite had her murder conviction overturned by an Italian jury.

“The Daily Fail” was not alone in their dumb erratum: The Sun had also published a headline claiming Knox has been found “guilty of killing Meredith Kercher.” Slightly less embarrassing was The Guardian‘s incorrect live-blog update, which said that “Knox has lost her appeal.”

All three publications have since stripped their sites of the false reports, but, for The Daily Mail and The Sun, damning URLs remain as warnings to others who would pen a priori posts.

Earthscraper

Mexican architecture group BNKR Arquitectura have come up with a concept that turns the conventional skyscraper on its head – literally.
The “earthscraper” is an inverted skyscraper that reaches 65-stories underground.

Designed to be built in the very center of Mexico City, the first ten floors would be an Aztec museum and cultural center, while the floors below would house retail space, apartments, and at the very bottom, businesses.

The structure is designed with open space in the middle where bridges will allow people to see the full 300 meters of the earthscraper.

Stephen King Shining Sequel

It’s official: Stephen King is writing a sequel to The Shining. The author has announced the new project on his website, and he even read an excerpt from the new book — called Dr. Sleep — at George Mason University over the weekend.

According to a tentative description King gave back in 2009, Dr. Sleep takes place 40 years after The Shining, and stars a grown-up Danny Torrance, now working with end-of-life patients in a hospice facility. Danny uses his powers to help his patients pass on to the other side … and also to bet on horse races.

The excerpt King read at George Mason features a traveling group of vampires called The Tribe, who have the ability to suck energy from “special people” like Danny.

Kick Ass Currency

The Canadian Mint has issued two new 25-cent coins featuring mythical creatures said to haunt Canada’s lakes: the serpentine Memphré (above) and the cat-like Mishepishu (below).

Memphré has a dragon-like head and a serpent’s body, and it’s been sighted as many as eight times a year in Lake Memphremagog (say that 10 times fast) since 1816. Mishepishu is a lynx-like cat that, according to Ojibwe legend, swims Lake Superior and has shapeshifting abilities.

Both of the cryptid-bearing quarters were illustrated by Emily Damstra, and they’re available from the mint for $24.95 CAD a piece.

Are Niue’s Star Wars coins now only the second-coolest currency on the planet?

Simpsons TV Network

Fox is considering starting an all-Simpsons TV channel, according to News Corp. CEO Chase Carey.

To pull that off, the company will have to wait until the show, which is about to start its 23rd season, finally stops producing new episodes. Old rerun deals for The Simpsons are still in effect, but Fox can make new deals once the show ends.
Wait or no wait, though: Springfield TV?! Woohoo!

Nick Helms Password Joke Voted Funniest

Comedian Nick Helm has won an award for the best joke of the Edinburgh Fringe.

The up-and-coming funnyman was given the prize by digital TV channel Dave, whose panel put a selection of their favourites to a public vote.
He won for the joke: "I needed a password eight characters long so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves."

Last year's winner, quick-fire joker Tim Vine, was beaten into second place by Helm.

Helm said: "I knew my joke was the funniest joke of all the other jokes in 2011.
"Thank you to Dave and all the people that voted for proving me right."

Veteran entertainer Paul Daniels won the wooden spoon for the worst joke of the festival.

He won the dubious honour for his gag: "I said to a fella 'Is there a B&Q in Henley?' He said 'No, there's an H, an E, an N an L and a Y'."

The top 10 festival funnies were judged to be:

1) Nick Helm: "I needed a password eight characters long so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves."

2) Tim Vine: "Crime in multi-storey car parks. That is wrong on so many different levels."

3) Hannibal Buress: "People say 'I'm taking it one day at a time'. You know what? So is everybody. That's how time works."

4) Tim Key: "Drive-Thru McDonalds was more expensive than I thought... once you've hired the car..."

5) Matt Kirshen: "I was playing chess with my friend and he said, 'Let's make this interesting'. So we stopped playing chess."

6) Sarah Millican: "My mother told me, you don't have to put anything in your mouth you don't want to. Then she made me eat broccoli, which felt like double standards."

7) Alan Sharp: "I was in a band which we called The Prevention, because we hoped people would say we were better than The Cure."

8) Mark Watson: "Someone asked me recently - what would I rather give up, food or sex. Neither! I'm not falling for that one again, wife."

9) Andrew Lawrence: "I admire these phone hackers. I think they have a lot of patience. I can't even be bothered to check my OWN voicemails."

10) DeAnne Smith: "My friend died doing what he loved ... Heroin."

Meme Alert! #Greenfieldism

British neuroscientist Baroness Susan Greenfield is known for her predictions about how the Internet is going to destroy society, that it "will rewire your brain" and "turn us into social cripples". In a recent interview for The Guardian, she said: "I point to the increase in autism and I point to internet use. That's all."

After reading this, science writer
Carl Zimmer, feeling his brain was rewiring into a seizure, took to Twitter: "I point to the increase in esophageal cancer and I point to The Brady Bunch. That's all. #greenfieldism"

The Twitterosphere picked up quickly:
