“I enjoy humour more than anything, I don’t really sit around banging my head and crying all the time,” says Phoenix. He made his big-screen debut in Space Camp (1986), playing the role of Max. In 1987 he co-starred in Ron Howard’s Parenthood (1989). He has earned positive reviews for his portrayals of various individuals: a troubled teen in To Die For (1995) the cruel Roman emperor Commodus in Gladiator (2000) in which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, a lovestruck farmer in Shyamalan’s The Village (2004), and heroic firefighter in Ladder 49 (2004). Phoenix sang all of the vocal tracks, along with co-star Reese Witherspoon in the life story of  Johnny Cash, in Walk the Line (2005). Phoenix was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, and won a Golden Globe in the same category in 2006. In 2008, Phoenix announced his retirement from acting and stated that he was going to be focusing on a music career.
